Democratic Candidate for Congressional District 6 in Illinois
Health Care Advocate
Kelly’s recovery two years ago from breast cancer treatment makes her a strong, fearless advocate for those living in the 6th Congressional district facing the uncertain future of our healthcare system. She has great empathy for the struggles others go through, realizing that an individual’s health and financial circumstances can change in an instant. As a mother who struggled to maintain her health care insurance after her diagnosis, and paid for coverage for her daughter with a pre-existing condition, Kelly believes it’s time to hold our elected leaders accountable for voting to make Americans pay more and get less for their health care coverage. Kelly believes that our community needs someone in Washington who has our best interests in mind and will work to find bipartisan solutions to our problems, rather than be a rubber stamp for Donald Trump’s dangerous agenda.
Kelly is very proud of her hardworking family, including her three grandparents who worked in labor. Her parents valued education, and even though they didn’t have the opportunity to attend college themselves, they worked extremely hard to make sure she and her sister could. Kelly wants everyone to have the same opportunities that have been afforded to her, and getting a good education is the most important step in making this possible.
Graduating College and Career
Growing up in a middle-class family, Kelly learned to approach problems with common sense and persistence. She graduated from Saint Mary’s College in Notre Dame, IN with a degree in Biology and minors in Chemistry and Business before taking a job as a product development chemist. Kelly eventually became a financial advisor for a major investment firm, a position that prepared her to deal with complex fiscal challenges.
As a community leader, Kelly has served eighteen years in local government in the positions of Village Trustee for North Barrington, Vice-Chairman and Member of the Zoning Board of Appeals for North Barrington and currently as Plan Commissioner for Barrington Hills. She enjoys meeting with her neighbors and finding out what issues are important to them so she can work in their best interest when voting on local matters.
Kelly has been an advocate for environmental protection and education for nearly twenty years, volunteering for the Sierra Club and serving as Energy and Environment Outreach Coordinator for the national Obama Campaign during 2007 and 2008. She currently serves on the board of the Illinois Environmental Council after being elected in 2014.
Kelly believes that teaching young minds to appreciate the outdoors is crucial to protecting our planet. She has conducted nature classes in IL District 220 schools, stressing the importance of wildlife and conservation, and guiding student walks on restored prairies. She leads bird walks for Openlands at Chicago Public Schools so children in urban environments can appreciate nature in their communities. Kelly and her husband are longtime members and volunteers of Citizens for Conservation, a Barrington area conservation group.
Kelly and her husband Conrad, a small business owner, have lived in the Barrington area for over 25 years where they have enjoyed raising their two children who are proud Barrington High School graduates.
