Democratic Candidate for the 6th Congressional District in Illinois
Kelly is running for Congress in the Illinois 6th Congressional District because we deserve a representative who will stand up to Donald Trump and fight for healthcare and the environment. She is a breast cancer survivor and mother of a daughter with a serious pre-existing condition. While going through chemotherapy, Kelly was notified she would be dropped by her insurance company of 20 years. Because of the Affordable Care Act, Kelly found quality health insurance on the health care exchange that allowed her and her daughter to keep their doctors. Kelly announced her campaign on the same day Peter Roskam voted to repeal Obamacare because she knows thousands of Illinois families will see their premiums spike and coverage dropped if Roskam and Donald Trump are allowed to continue their attempts to weaken the Affordable Care Act.
Scientist and Environmentalist
Kelly is also a scientist who recognizes the harsh realities of climate change. As the first in her family to graduate from college, with a degree in biology and minor in chemistry, Kelly’s first job was as a Product Development Chemist. She is a longtime member of the Sierra Club, was an Energy and Environment Outreach Coordinator for Obama’s 2008 presidential campaign, and was elected to the board of the Illinois Environmental Council in 2014 because of her commitment to the environment. Kelly will take on Donald Trump’s dangerous attacks on the environment and help lead the fight against climate change.
Kelly grew up in a middle class community in Indianapolis, IN where many of her family members were union workers, including her three grandparents. Her parents valued education, and even though they didn’t have the opportunity to attend college themselves, they worked hard to make sure Kelly and her sister could. Kelly wants everyone to have the same opportunities that have been afforded to her, and getting a good education is the most important step in making this possible.
As a community leader, Kelly has served 18 years in local government as a Village Trustee for North Barrington, Vice-Chairman and Member of the Zoning Board of Appeals for North Barrington, and currently as Plan Commissioner for Barrington Hills. She knows the importance of meeting with her neighbors to find out what issues are important to them so she can work in their best interest when voting on local matters.
Kelly believes that teaching young minds to appreciate the outdoors is crucial to protecting our planet. She has conducted nature classes in IL District 220 schools, stressing the importance of wildlife and conservation, and guided student walks on restored prairies. Currently, she leads bird walks for Openlands at Chicago Public Schools so children in urban environments can appreciate nature in their own communities. Kelly and her husband are longtime members and volunteers of Citizens for Conservation, a Barrington-area conservation group.
Kelly and her husband, Conrad, a small business owner, have lived in the Barrington area for over 27 years where they raised their two children who are proud Barrington High School graduates.
